DriveNudge is designed to reduce phone distraction while driving or cycling. Privacy is built into the app: sensitive information is processed on your iPhone, not on our servers.
Privacy at a Glance
- No account is required.
- No advertising or behavioral profiling.
- No analytics, tracking SDKs, or remote logging.
- No location or motion data is sent to us.
- No route history is stored.
- Your Screen Time selections, settings, and safety statistics remain on your device.
- We do not sell or share personal information.
1. Who We Are
DriveNudge is developed and published by Merling Meijer, based in the Netherlands.
For privacy questions or requests, contact us at:
Email: privacy@merlingmeijer.com
Website: https://merlingmeijer.com/drive-nudge-app/
This Privacy Policy applies to the DriveNudge iOS application. Other pages, shops, forms, or services on merlingmeijer.com may be covered by separate website and cookie notices.
2. Information Processed on Your Device
DriveNudge uses certain information locally to provide its safety features. This information is not transmitted to Merling Meijer or to third parties.
Location and Speed
DriveNudge uses Apple’s Location Services to estimate your current speed and determine when protection should start or stop.
If you grant Always Location permission, speed detection can continue in the background when DriveNudge is not visible. If you grant only While Using the App permission, automatic background detection may be limited by iOS.
DriveNudge does not store precise location coordinates or route history. Location information is not sent to a server.
Motion Activity
DriveNudge uses Apple’s Motion Activity framework to improve detection of states such as automotive movement, cycling, walking, running, and stationary activity.
Motion activity is evaluated locally and is not retained as a movement history or transmitted off your device.
Screen Time Selections
DriveNudge uses Apple’s Family Controls and Managed Settings frameworks. You may select apps, app categories, and websites that should be shielded while protection is active.
These selections are stored locally as opaque Screen Time tokens. Merling Meijer does not receive the tokens or the readable names of your selected apps, categories, or websites.
Settings and Safety Statistics
DriveNudge stores your preferences and safety statistics locally. These may include:
- Transport mode and custom speed threshold.
- Detection sensitivity and warning preferences.
- Screen Time selection tokens.
- Detection checks and detected journey counts.
- Maximum observed speed.
- Protected travel time.
- Screen activation and unsafe-use counters.
- Blocked-app attempt counts.
- Up to 200 recent shield-action records containing a timestamp, action, and target type, but not a readable app name.
An Apple App Group allows the main app and its Shield Action extension to share local blocked-attempt information. This data remains on your device.
3. Information We Do Not Collect
The DriveNudge app does not collect or transmit:
- Your name, email address, or contact details.
- Apple ID or account credentials.
- Precise or approximate location.
- Route or travel history.
- Motion history.
- Readable names of selected apps or websites.
- Device identifiers for advertising or tracking.
- Usage analytics or diagnostic logs.
- Payment information.
DriveNudge has no developer-operated backend, account system, advertising SDK, analytics SDK, cloud synchronization, or third-party tracking SDK.
4. Apple Services
DriveNudge relies on Apple-provided operating-system services, including Location Services, Motion Activity, Family Controls, Managed Settings, Screen Time, and the App Store.
Your use of Apple devices and services is also subject to Apple’s own privacy policy and terms. DriveNudge does not receive your Apple ID, App Store payment details, or other Apple account information.
5. Storage and Retention
Live location and motion information is used only for current detection and is not stored as route or movement history.
Settings, Screen Time tokens, and statistics remain on your device until you change or clear them or delete DriveNudge. Shield-action records use a rolling limit of 200 records and can be removed with the statistics reset option.
Because this information is not sent to us, we cannot view, retrieve, export, or remotely delete it.
6. Your Controls
You control DriveNudge’s access and local information. You can:
- Change or clear your selected apps, categories, and websites in DriveNudge.
- Reset local safety statistics in the app’s Settings screen.
- Change Location and Motion permissions in iOS Settings.
- Revoke Screen Time authorization through the controls provided by iOS.
- Delete all app data by deleting DriveNudge from your device.
Disabling a permission may limit or prevent the related protection feature from working.
7. Support Communications
If you contact us by email or through a support form, we receive the information you choose to provide, such as your email address, message, and any attachments.
We use this information only to respond to your request, provide support, protect the app and our rights, or comply with legal obligations. We do not use support communications for behavioral advertising.
Support communications are retained only as long as reasonably necessary to resolve the request, maintain appropriate business records, and meet legal obligations. Email and hosting providers may process this information on our behalf under their applicable terms and privacy safeguards.
8. Legal Basis for Support Data
Where European or United Kingdom data-protection law applies, we process support communications based on our legitimate interest in providing support and maintaining DriveNudge, to take steps related to a contract when applicable, or to comply with a legal obligation.
On-device permissions are controlled by you through iOS. DriveNudge uses permission-protected information only to provide the functionality you choose to enable.
9. Your Privacy Rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights regarding personal information we hold about you, including rights to access, correct, delete, restrict, or object to processing, and to receive a portable copy where applicable.
These rights mainly apply to information you send us in a support request, because DriveNudge’s app data remains on your device and is not accessible to us.
You may submit a request using the contact details above. We may need to verify your identity before completing a request. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data-protection authority. In the Netherlands, this is the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens.
10. United States Privacy Disclosures
We do not sell personal information. We do not share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising. We do not use sensitive personal information to infer characteristics about users, and we do not provide targeted advertising through DriveNudge.
Because app information remains on your device, requests relating to local app data should be completed using DriveNudge’s controls or by deleting the app.
11. Children and Young Drivers
DriveNudge is not directed to children under 13 and does not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Parents or guardians may choose to set up DriveNudge together with a young driver. DriveNudge runs on the driver’s own iPhone and is not a remote monitoring or parental-surveillance service.
12. Automated Detection
DriveNudge automatically evaluates speed, motion state, permissions, and your settings to estimate whether protection should be active. This processing occurs locally and is used only to control the app-shielding experience.
It is not used for profiling, advertising, credit decisions, insurance decisions, employment decisions, or other decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects.
13. Security
DriveNudge relies on iOS protections, app sandboxing, permission controls, and local storage mechanisms to protect its on-device information. No method of storage is completely secure, but limiting processing to the device substantially reduces exposure.
You are responsible for securing your iPhone with an appropriate passcode and keeping iOS up to date.
14. International Data Transfers
DriveNudge app information is not transferred to Merling Meijer or to a developer-operated server.
If you contact support, service providers used for email or hosting may process your communication in countries outside your own. Where required, we use appropriate safeguards for such processing.
15. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy when DriveNudge’s features, legal requirements, or privacy practices change. The revised policy will show a new “Last updated” date.
If a change materially affects how personal information is handled, we will provide additional notice where reasonably required.
16. DriveNudge Website Cookies and Google Ads
This section applies only to the DriveNudge pages on merlingmeijer.com. It does not change the privacy practices of the DriveNudge iOS app described above.
Necessary preference storage
We store a first-party cookie named dn_cookie_consent for up to 180 days. Its sole purpose is to remember whether you accepted or rejected optional measurement and advertising cookies. This preference storage is necessary to respect your choice.
Optional Google Ads measurement
Only after you give consent, the DriveNudge landing page loads the Google tag with identifier AW-870055045. Google Ads may then process information such as your IP address, browser and device information, page URL, consent status, and advertising click or conversion identifiers, and may store or read cookies for measurement and advertising purposes. Google acts under its own privacy terms.
The legal basis for this optional processing is your consent. Refusing consent does not restrict access to the DriveNudge pages. You can withdraw or change your choice at any time using the “Cookievoorkeuren” button. When consent is denied, Google Consent Mode v2 is set to denied for advertising storage, advertising user data, advertising personalization, and analytics storage, and the Google tag is not loaded.
For more information, see Google’s Privacy Policy.
